Can Functional Patterns help

with Scoliosis?

The left image shows the man with less muscle definition and a less developed back, while the right image shows increased muscle tone and a more defined back. Both images are taken indoors, with him wearing shorts.

The answer is YES!

How Does Functional Patterns address Scoliosis?

Functional Patterns (FP) addresses scoliosis by focusing on the root cause of the spinal curvature: muscular imbalances and dysfunctional movement patterns. Rather than treating the spine in isolation, our method retrains the entire body to move in a way that decompresses the spine and strengthens the muscles needed to hold a more neutral posture.

At Our Sydney facility…

we have worked with numerous clients who have used these techniques to reduce chronic back pain and significantly reduce the ’S curve’ of their spine.

How is Functional Patterns Different from Traditional treatments?

Traditional treatments for scoliosis often involve bracing, surgery, or static stretching (like yoga). While these may offer temporary relief, they rarely fix the underlying mechanical issue.

What Sets Us Apart

At Functional Patterns Sydney, we take a different approach

We Prioritize Gait (Walking)

Scoliosis often worsens because of how a person walks. If your gait cycle is dysfunctional, every step you take can compress your spine further. We analyze your walking pattern and correct it.

We Focus on Tension, Not Stretching

Stretching a curved spine can sometimes make it unstable. We use tension-based exercises to create stability around the spine.

We Train the "Slings"

The body is connected by chains of muscles called "myofascial slings." By training these slings (like the connection between your right shoulder and left hip), we can help pull the spine back toward the center.

What to expect at our facility

When you come to our Alexandria facility for an Initial Consultation, we don't just look at an X-ray. We look at how you move in real-time.

  • Posture Analysis: We look at how you stand and analyse your compensations and compressions. We take photos to show you exactly where your imbalances are.

  • Gait Analysis: We film you walking or running to see how you move through space to see how movement affects your spine.

  • Corrective Exercises: We teach you the "FP Big 4" and other foundational movements to start correcting your structure immediately.

Real Results

You may have seen the "Before and After" results on the many different Functional Patterns channels. We see similar transformations here in Sydney. Clients often report:

  • Significant reduction in back and hip pain.

  • Reduction in the ’S curve’ of the spine

  • Feeling "taller" and more upright.

  • Improved ability to walk, run and play sports.
